image London,U.K. :You must have witnessed the mushrooming of gym and fitness centres in your neighbourhood in the recent past. This is just like the spread of fast food chains, a study reveals.

With successful gyms now spreading wings to different countries and promoting a typical body ideal, the fitness industry today resembles in many ways the fast food chains, said a study that explored the development of the modern fitness concept.

McDonaldisation of the gym culture is the theme of the article published in 'Sports, Education and Society'.

The study is partly based on interviews with personal trainers and group fitness instructors.

image New York,U.S.: If you are longing for a quiet and relaxing meal with your kids, cut up their food as research has found that children are likely to become more rowdy when they need to bite the food with their front teeth.

When 6-10 year old children ate foods they had to bite with their front teeth, such as drumsticks, whole apples, or corn on the cob, they were rowdier than when these foods had been cut, said the study.

"They were twice as likely to disobey adults and twice as aggressive toward other kids," said Brian Wansink, a professor at Cornell University.

For the study, the researchers observed 12 elementary children for two days.

The US Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau has approved the sale of powdered alcohol in tiny pouches.

Named Palcohol, it could be available as early as this fall.

“Palcohol is a great convenience for the person on the go. One package weighs about an ounce and is small enough to fit into any pocket,” said its Phoenix-based developer Mark Phillips on his website.

image London,U.K. : Those who doze off during the day to catch some 'missed' night sleep, beware!

According to an alarming research, middle-age and older adults who take daytime naps at office or home may be at increased risk of dying.

In particular, naps were linked with an increased risk of dying from respiratory diseases.

Those between ages 40 and 65 were nearly twice as likely to die during the study period if they napped for an hour or more, compared to those who did not nap, the researchers from University of Cambridge said.

“Excessive daytime napping might be a useful marker of underlying health risks, particularly re

Mitochondria - organelles that produce the energy needed for muscle, brain, and every other cell in the body - stop self repair in both long-time alcoholics and patients with mitochondrial disease resulting in muscle weakness, a study says.

This is because “alcohol can have a specific effect on one gene involved in mitochondrial fusion”, said lead author Gyorgy Hajnoczky from Pennsylvania-based Thomas Jefferson University.

In the new study, the researcher teams of Prof. Christoph Beglinger from the University Hospital of Basel and Prof. Stefan Borgwardt from the Psychiatric University Clinics found that green tea extract increases the brain's effective connectivity, meaning the causal influence that one brain area exerts over another.
